BCSupportTeam ha scritto: We've had a handful of questions come in lately regarding online books, journals, using a BCID for tracking various BC activities, etc.
Let's start with this: BCIDs (BookCrossing IDs) are for books. While we're aware that many of you are using BCIDs for a variety of other things, we *would* like you to keep in mind:
Registering a "non-book" and then sharing the BCID with 100 other BookCrossers skews the "Most Travelled" books list. The "Most Travelled" books list should be actual books, as this is one of the parts of the site to which media outlets and newbies routinely refer. If a large percentage of books on that list aren't books, how does that accurately represent the idea of "Make the whole world a library", and what BookCrossing is all about? Obviously, it doesn't, so we try to keep the most-travelled list a list of actual books that are truly well-travelled. Of course journals can be confusing, but at least they are physical books!
Although we'd prefer that all BCIDs be assigned to books only, we know that there are some BCIDs already in use that will probably not be changed, simply as a result of this post *grin*. Knowing that, we're asking that all such "not-books" be categorized as "e-books" so that they will not appear on the most-travelled list, which is fair as they do not actually travel. This includes bookboxes*, a variety of online journals, online poetry and recipe lists, HomeCrossing and more. A BCID should never take the place of a forum thread.
The SupportTeam regularly audits the site for books that aren't books, to move them into the e-books category, but since the volunteer support team has limited time, we only re-categorize books that have come to our attention. If you know of other candidates, you could either PM the people who registered those "books" and ask them to change the category or pass the links along to us. Linking to this thread would be a good idea if you are sending a PM.
Last, using a BCID for a bookbox can be excused (but see the note below). Using a virtual book (and thus a BCID) as your own personal website is not ok. If you are using a BCID as a personal website, we recommend that you take advantage of one of the many free blogging sites available, transfer your data there, and re-use the BCID for a real book. Then, read and release it!
*A note about bookboxes: we favor the solution used by BookCrossers who include an actual, physical blank journal in the box that has a BCID in it. That BCID can be used to track the travels of the box, as well as what is being added and removed. It saves flooding the side bar with releases when the box moves on, and members need only journal on the books they take, plus the BookBox journal.
